2009 Flood – Karnataka & Andhra Pradesh

The flood of 2009 serves as a reminder of how dangerous storms can be. Claiming hundreds of lives and affecting millions of Indians, torrential rains left a trail of death and destruction in the states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The record-breaking rainfall and flooding caused nearly ₹200 billion in damage to private and public property. Over 1.5 million people were left homeless. The regions which bore the brunt of the flood fury are struggling to come back to normalcy.

The magnitude of disaster caused by the floods merits a compendious and collaborative approach to rebuilding plans for this critical region and its infrastructure. The region’s infrastructure and economic conditions must be addressed in order to bring these systems to a more resilient condition, given both current and future risks.

The Flood Relief Task Force immediately rushed to aid the affected and donated their time, treasure and talents to help with the cleanup, recovery, food distribution, medical aid and rebuilding of communities devastated by hurricanes and tropical storms. KDA and its relief forces donated over 10 tonnes of relief material in the affected areas. Flood Relief Task Force successfully constructed shelter homes for more than 120 families as well as extended financial support to the Karnataka Chief Minister’s Flood Relief Funds.
